Hitachi Vantara saw significant growth in its Hitachi content Platform (HCP) object storage business in the first half of 2021, with a projected 40% growth in the second half of the year, outstripping the  market CAGR of 13.6%.

The growth is reflects organizations’ efforts to convert massive amounts of data into insights that can be used to improve customer experiences, create new efficiencies, automate operations and fuel innovation.

Given that unstructured data accounts for up to 90% of all data stored, the growth of object storage is not surprising. Object storage is an efficient, affordable way to store static content like email, video and audio, web pages, sensor data and other types of digital content that can’t be packaged neatly into files or folders.

Object storage holds data objects, which each of their own metadata, in a flat pool with no hierarchy. Data is not siloed, so it can be easily analyzed. And it is extremely scalable.

Object storage is ideal for:

1.     Backup and recovery – Object storage can reduce the cost of data replication and backup while retaining immediate access to your data. If a physical device fails or is corrupted by ransomware, a duplicate copy is available. Data can be replicated across multiple data centers or regions.

2.     AI and data analytics – Object storage can store large amounts of any type of data, which can then be queried to gain insights or take actions about customers or operations. Object storage is ideal for a data lake because of its vast scalability. Object storage delivers the scale and cost efficiency required for AI and machine learning.

3.     Data archiving – Healthcare providers, government agencies or other enterprises may need to retain large amounts of data and keep it protected and compliant with data privacy laws. Object storage is cost efficient for cold storage since the data may not need to be accessed for months or years.

4.     Cloud-native applications – Use object storage as a persistent data store for building or migrating to cloud-native applications.

5.     Media and entertainment – Object storage is ideal for production, storage, and distribution of distribute music, video and images.
