AI, Energy-Efficient Computing and Hybrid Computing Are Among Gartner’s Top 10 Strategic Technology Trends for 2025

Gartner's top technology trends for 2025 give IT solution providers into IT leaders' priorities for the coming year.

Learn More about this topic

Each year, Gartner identifies the top technology trends to help CIOs and IT leaders shape the future with responsible innovation. These insights can help IT leaders get insights into use cases from early adopters, consider how these trends align with their own enterprise digital ambitions, and think through how their businesses may need to adapt to benefit from future technologies. For IT solution providers, Gartner’s strategic technology trends provide insight into customers’ future priorities.

At Hybrid Cloud Solutions for the Data-Driven, we’re thrilled to bring you regular coverage of how you can grow your business with Hitachi Vantara solutions as you meet customers’ growing data and AI, hybrid cloud, and sustainable infrastructure needs. Let’s take a look at three of Gartner’s overall themes for next year.

AI Imperatives and Risks

Gartner identifies “AI imperatives and risks drive organizations to protect themselves” as its top theme for IT leaders. Agentic AI can act autonomously or semi-autonomously, on behalf of a user, such as a virtual workforce assistant. Use cases include empowering workers to develop and manage more complex projects through natural language interfaces, automating customer experiences using data analysis and calculated decisions, or changing an organization’s decision-making and improving situational awareness through quicker data analysis and prediction intelligence.

Perhaps not surprisingly, Gartner identifies “AI governance platforms” as a key trend under its AI imperatives theme, as organizations seek to place guardrails to ensure their AI systems align with their intentions and that they can manage their AI systems’ legal and ethical implications as well as operational performance.

New Frontiers of Computing

“New frontiers of computing prompt organizations to reconsider how they compute” is Gartner’s #2 theme for 2025. Gartner points to post-quantum cryptography, which is needed to protect data against the security risks that come with the advances in quantum computing. It also foresees that ambient invisible intelligence, or technology that’s unobtrusively integrated into the environment, will enable more natural and intuitive experiences.

Gartner also identifies energy-efficient computing as part of this umbrella trend, as business leaders face increasing legal, commercial, and social pressures to improve sustainability and reduce their organizations’ carbon footprint. Gartner points to use cases like cutting data center costs by reducing the power consumption of servers and cooling systems, using energy-efficient computing to design more sustainable products, and using smart power management systems to reduce power consumption across office networks.

Gartner identifies hybrid computing as a key trend under its “new frontiers of computing” theme, as IT leaders seek to “combine different compute, storage, and network mechanisms to solve computational problems.” The trend covers not only today’s use of CPUs, GPUs, edge devices, and specialized ASICs, but also emerging technologies like neuromorphic, quantum, and photonic systems.

By mastering hybrid computing, Gartner foresees that enterprises can create transformative environments with AI, scale workloads for greater efficiency and data security, and pave the way for spatial computing, increasingly sophisticated and multi-functional robots, and yes, brain-machine interfaces for neurological enhancement.
