Get Ready for a Ransomware Attack with CyberVR and Hitachi Vantara’s Data Protection Suite

The data explosion makes enterprises more vulnerable to ransomware than ever. Hitachi Vantara cyber resiliency solutions can help you protect your customers.

Get Ready for a Ransomware Attack with CyberVR and Hitachi Vantara’s Data Protection Suite

The data explosion has generated an ocean of opportunity for bad actors to launch ransomware attacks on enterprise organizations in both the government and business sectors.

IDC predicts that industry will generate 175 zettabytes of data by this year, and 75% of enterprise-generated data will get created and processed outside a traditional centralized data center.

That means data will reside not just in data centers, but remotely on smartphones, at the enterprise’s edge, and in hybrid environments.

“On top of all of this, attack groups are getting more sophisticated,” said Macey Jones, principal, data resiliency and compliance solutions at Hitachi Vantara in this webinar. “The criminals are now using the same AI tools that are available to enterprises.”

Jones points out that organizations are very exposed today – and the threats are only growing worse: By 2031, Cybersecurity Ventures predicts that there will be a ransomware attack every two seconds – a dramatic increase from one in every 11 seconds in 2021.

Improve Cyber Resiliency and Data Protection

The solution for enterprises: A combination of VM2020’s CyberVR automation platform with the Hitachi Vantara Data Protection Suite (HDPS) powered by Commvault.

Both tools promise to improve cyber resiliency and data protection in the event of ransomware attacks. Here’s what they do:

CyberVR creates digital copies of production systems IT teams can use to:

  • Optimize business workflows
  • Validate change management procedures
  • Test server and application recoverability
  • Collect evidence of cybersecurity capabilities or weaknesses.

HDPS offers storage and data protection that includes:

  • Advanced threat identification and detection
  • Secure, immutable storage, with a 100% reliability guarantee
  • Native capabilities to respond and recover data quickly
  • Scalable data protection across multiple environments
  • Unified management
  • AI/ML optimization
  • Threat protection.

Hitachi Vantara’s Demo Based on the 2023 Casino Hacks

In the fall of 2023, MGM Resorts International sustained a cyberattack, an incident that the casino group estimated would have a $100 million impact on the company. Also at roughly the same time, Caesars was hit with an attack in which it reportedly paid a $15 million ransom.

Todd Hanson, a technical expert at Hitachi Vantara, recently gave a demo that explained a scenario of how a “mock” casino could recover data from a ransomware incident in the event of an attack.

Hanson said Step 1 was to power off all the virtual machines with the VMware vSphere client so the team can preserve it for analysis later. Next, for Step 2, he went into CyberVR and did a Casino Restore from the remote DR site. In doing this, he restored the applications, web servers, and databases.

For Step 3, Hanson went into HDPS powered by Commvault and restored the database to an earlier time before the cyber incident. The system gives notifications that the job was submitted, and after a refresh, the site was restored and the mock casino business was back up.
