Why Your Customers Need a Comprehensive Data Security Strategy

A multifaceted data security strategy reduced backup and recovery times at one healthcare provider from six hours to under 30 minutes.

Why Your Customers Need a Comprehensive Data Security Strategy

Over the next five years, Statistica reports that global data creation will surpass 180 zettabytes: that’s something like 180 trillion gigabytes.

Combine this ever-expanding data creation with the increased threat of ransomware and data exfiltration, advanced malware, and other cyberattacks, and it’s clear that organizations have to rethink the way they run their storage and data management operations.

Companies can no longer operate with a storage sprawl that has many organizations operating close to 30 different storage devices, all with their own management software, and most of which don’t offer the data insights delivered by the latest machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies.

So in this new data-centric world, where it’s almost inevitable that an organization will fall victim to a cyberattack, data protection and recovery and response have become paramount. Because it’s not always that a company gets hacked, but it’s a matter of how quickly and how well a company can recover from these attacks.

No Time for Downtime

Dia Ali, global solution lead for digital content at Hitachi Vantara, said in this webinar before deploying the data storage and protection solution from Hitachi Vantara and CommVault, a healthcare provider they worked with recently told them it used to take up to six hours for them to recover their data from a critical database. Today, data backup and recovery takes 30 minutes – and they’ve also minimized disruptions.

“During the time the systems were down nothing was being serviced,” said Ali. “By leveraging our object-based solution for streamlining data backup and redesigning their recovery strategy, we were able to preserve their competitive edge.”

A Multifaceted Data Protection Approach

Ali added that while object storage can help companies recover from an attack, they really have to adopt a multi-faceted security approach that includes the following:

  • Object storage for immutability, meaning that the data gets written once and can’t be altered or deleted, preventing attackers from modifying or encrypting data.
  • Regular backups and data protection, using airgaps to isolate locations.
  • Strong access controls, using new products that can intercept ransomware before the data gets compromised.
  • Continuous monitoring and intrusion detection.
  • Rapid response and recovery strategy in the event of an attack.
  • User education on phishing emails and document attachments.

“No one product or solution can offer absolute protection against all potential threats,” said Ali. “Ransomware tactics continue to evolve, and there’s always a chance an attacker can find new ways to exploit vulnerabilities. That’s why a comprehensive defense and protection strategy is crucial. Our recommendation is to couple object storage with a comprehensive cybersecurity strategy.”
