More than 75% of US companies say data infrastructure is falling short as data security and sustainability challenges surge, according to a new Hitachi Vantara survey.
Data may be an organization’s most valuable asset, but the biggest challenge is to put that data to work. Companies are drowning in data, with 60% of research respondents reporting that they are overwhelmed by the amount of data they manage and 76% concerned that their data infrastructure will be unable to scale to meet upcoming demands.
The data deluge is gathering momentum, and the research shows that companies expect their data needs to double in the next two years. Generative AI and other data-intensive applications may be the key to insights and efficiencies, but they’re also putting a big strain on already overworked data infrastructure. Business leaders are finding that protecting and managing data in an actionable and sustainable way is increasingly difficult.
The Modern Data Infrastructure Dynamics research study, conducted among 1288 C-level executives and IT decision makers, quantifies the extent of the struggle.
Key findings include:
- Respondents say that data is their most valuable asset but they are concerned about the security and resilience of their data infrastructure. In fact, 71% are concerned they can’t detect a data breach in time to protect data.
- 65% of respondents are concerned over whether their organization’s data infrastructure is resilient enough to recover from ransomware attacks. More than a quarter of respondents admitted that important data wasn’t being backed up and 35% had experienced data inaccessibility due to storage outages.
- 66% of IT leaders measure their data center’s energy consumption; however, only 32% acknowledged that their data infrastructure uses too much energy. And nearly half admitted that their sustainability policies don’t address the impact of storing unused data.
Solution providers can provide a strategic role in helping businesses turn data into action and guide businesses to find the right balance between data scalability, sustainability, and protection in a world where data is increasingly spread across private and public cloud infrastructure.
