In today’s competitive global news cycles, downtime isn’t just a disruption—it’s a disaster. That’s why Malayala Manorama, India’s second-largest newspaper by circulation, tapped Hitachi Vantara to future-proof its IT infrastructure and keep operations running smoothly across print, broadcast, and digital platforms.

Founded more than 135 years ago, Malayala Manorama has evolved into a modern multimedia giant, with a diverse portfolio of print, broadcast, and online media brands. With massive data volumes, demanding uptime requirements, and a growing audience, the organization needed an IT refresh that could keep up. Enter Hitachi Vantara.

Working with systems integrator Vertex Technosolutions, Malayala Manorama deployed Hitachi’s Virtual Storage Platform (VSP) and Advanced Servers, building a resilient, high-performance foundation across four major data centers and 11 local sites.

This Just In: Storage Footprint Savings

The results of the infrastructure overhaul are impressive across the board:

  • 66% reduction in storage footprint
  • 70% savings on power and cooling
  • Instant application responsiveness
  • Seamless data migration from legacy systems.

“Hitachi Vantara’s solutions align perfectly with our goals of enhancing efficiency, scalability, and reliability,” says V V Jacob, Senior GM of IT at Malayala Manorama.  “Their products are at the forefront of storage technology, and their proactive support is second to none, which made them the ideal partner for our IT transformation.”

At the core of the solution is Hitachi’s VSP, chosen for the ability to deliver low latency, high throughput, and exceptional uptime. Malayala Manorama uses Hitachi VSP E590 and E790 and 21x Hitachi Advanced Server DS.

Coupled with the Hitachi Ops Center, IT teams at the media firm manage storage through a centralized console, reducing overhead and simplifying operations.

Failure Resistance x3

The infrastructure is also built for failure resilience, with three-way replication between data centers. If one site goes down, systems automatically fail over, ensuring continuous operations with no interruption to journalists or audiences.

And the savings are just as significant as the performance gains. Beyond reduced energy costs and rack space, the total cost of ownership for storage arrays has improved dramatically.

“This isn’t just an upgrade—it’s a transformation,” said Bijoy R Nair, MD of Vertex Technosolutions. “Malayala Manorama now has an infrastructure built to scale with its growing needs while staying agile, efficient, and always-on.”

Jacob adds that both from a commercial and a technical perspective, “we’ve been happy with the transparent and straightforward approach of the Vertex and Hitachi teams. We got the right solution at the right price. It has been a successful engagement for all three companies.”

For IT solution providers, this case is a powerful reminder: when performance, availability, and cost savings all matter, the right technology partners can make all the difference.
